Laser Technicians Job Overview

Laser technicians perform a wide range of activities. Much depends on your job and your job. For example, some repair lasers and educate companies on their use, while others work as technicians for very specific applications, such as optical surgery or welding parts.

In general, most technicians work in one of five areas: material processing, communication, military, medical and research. Technicians participate in the construction of laser devices in one of these fields. To build a solid state laser, they build, cut and polish a crystal bar for use in the laser. They put a flash tube around the glass and place the unit in a container with a mirror on each end. Using precision tools, they position the mirrors so that all the light emitted or reflected passes through the glass. Finally, they place the laser body on a frame, install pipes and cables on the controls and put a cover around the assembly.

There are other activities that all technicians perform, regardless of the application they work on. These include measurements, cleaning, alignment, inspection and operation of lasers and data collection. Since the laser field is technologically advanced, computers are used in many activities and applications. Technicians may be responsible for programming computers that control lasers, insert data or generate reports.

In the processing of materials, lasers are used for mechanical processing, production, measurement, construction, excavation and photographic optics. Technicians often read and interpret diagrams, diagrams and workshop drawings to assemble the components themselves or supervise the assembly process. They can operate lasers for welding, precision drilling, cutting and grinding of metal parts or for cutting and cutting electronic components and circuit elements. They can use lasers to check the precise dimensions of the parts. Finally, technicians can participate in partial marking, using a laser to mark an identification number or letter on each component. In construction, they can use a laser as a topographical guide or alignment tool.
