Duties and responsibilities of the materials manager

In their simplest responsibility, material handlers move product. They usually work in warehouses or manufacturing plants. Material handlers move products to and from shipping trucks and ensure that the shelves are properly stocked with all the materials needed to fulfill orders. Most materials managers work full time and may need to work overtime during peak periods, such as vacations. They can work their hours in any combination of first, second or third shift, depending on the availability of the program. Material handlers generally report directly to shift supervisors or warehouse managers.

Material handlers typically perform the same tasks and responsibilities, regardless of employer. However, the specific materials they handle may differ. A materials manager generally performs these main tasks:

Manage shipments

Material handlers typically spend most of their time managing shipments in and out of the warehouse. This includes the use of forklifts and pallet trucks to move pallets of materials in and out of trucks.

Unpacking package and materials

Material handlers pack materials to prepare for shipping and unpack the materials to place on warehouse shelves.

Inspect materials

Material handlers inspect all the materials they handle to ensure they are properly packaged and undamaged. They also inspect shipments to make sure all requested quantities are there.

Maintain inventory records

All shipments in and out of the warehouse must be properly tracked. Materials managers are responsible for maintaining inventory records to ensure that all products are properly stored and available.

Customer service

Material handlers can provide customer service for customers or customers who call to inquire about the status of different shipments. They can also provide advice on when the materials will be available for purchase.
