While most employers prefer a degree in computer science or another related subject to qualify for a system administrator role, I think this is unnecessary. Many system administrators have different backgrounds. Actually, one of my colleagues doesn't have a degree, even though I work as a system administrator.
If you do not have a degree in computer science, you have to prove your knowledge of system administration in other ways, e.g. B. by authorizing professional certificates offered by various technology providers such as Red Hat, Amazon, etc.
What does a normal working day look like? What are your tasks as a system administrator?
As a system administrator, your typical daily routine includes monitoring, implementation, and troubleshooting. Monitoring means that you should have your list of all systems under your responsibility to check their availability, performance, backup, etc. Both commercial and free tools are available for this purpose.
Deployment occurs when you respond to business needs or requests from other departments in the company to deploy a new system. When troubleshooting, this is your answer to emergencies that arise. Remember that your primary responsibility as a system administrator is to keep your organization active by ensuring that your systems are available according to your organization's rules.
What's the funnest part of the job?
For me, I've always been interested in controlling things. As a system administrator, I can enforce control. But that has the price of responsibility, so you have to be careful.
